Man himself is the lost word in one concept. He is the mysterious link between heaven and earth. He is by nature empowered to speak the creative words which would insure peace and harmony and happiness in the world, but he does not speak it because he has lost its meaning. He does not know how to articulate the word which is the end of strife. In the soul systems of most ancient peoples, therefore, something had to take the place of the lost word, and what in our thinking could take the place of truth, that which is the eternal fact of all things? Knowledge is no substitute because knowledge is forever changing. Wisdom is inadequate because wisdom is based upon the uncertain foundation of a lost word. We have probably only one term that is appropriate to our needs, the one most transforming word in the experience of the human soul, and that is love. What cannot be known can be accepted, and love is founded in perfect faith. Faith, therefore, must take the place of fact. Love of God must take the place of the knowledge of God, and through a deep and spiritualized devotion the soul is lifted up into the proximity of Deity through the mystery of illumination.

In the royal hunts of ancient China it was customary to drive up the game from three sides, but on the fourth the animals had a chance to run off. If they failed to do this they had to pass through a gate behind which the king stood ready to shoot. Only animals that entered here were shot; those that ran off in front were permitted to escape. This custom accorded, with a kingly attitude; the royal hunter did not wish to turn the chase into a slaughter, but held that the kill should consist only of those animals which had so to speak voluntarily exposed themselves.

There is depicted here a ruler, or influential man, to whom people are attracted. Those who come to him he accepts, those who do not come are allowed to go their own way. He invites none, flatters none—all come of their own free will. In this way there develops a voluntary dependence among those who hold to him. They do not have to be constantly on their guard but may express their opinions openly. Police measures are not necessary, and they cleave to their ruler of their own volition. This same principle of freedom is valid for life in general. We should not woo favor from people. If a man cultivates within himself the purity and the strength that are necessary for one who is the center of a fellowship, those who are meant for him come of their own accord.

The assertion that "all men are created equal" was of no practical use in effecting our separation from Great Britain; and it was placed in the Declaration, not for that, but for future use. Ravi Shankar

The late sitarist, composer and musical ambassador Ravi Shankar,
left this dimension Tuesday at age 92. His influence comes through
a universal sphere of consciousness, from the name that fan and
onetime Shankar student John Coltrane gave his son, to the way
that the sound of the sitar seeped into who knows how many pop
productions in the decades that followed and Shankar's first encounter
with George Harrison in 1966.

The function of education is to give the student abundant knowledge in the various fields of human endeavor and at the same time to free his mind from all tradition so that he is able to investigate, to find out, to discover. Otherwise the mind becomes mechanical, burdened with the machinery of knowledge. Unless it is constantly freeing itself from the accumulations of tradition, the mind is incapable of discovering the Supreme, that which is eternal; but it must obviously acquire expanding knowledge and information so that it is capable of dealing with the things that man needs and must produce.
So knowledge, which is the cultivation of memory, is useful and necessary at a certain level, but at another level it becomes a detriment. To recognize the distinction—to see where knowledge is destructive and has to be put aside, and where it is essential and to be allowed to function with as much amplitude as possible—is the beginning of intelligence.
