Star Menu In Honor of Katharine Hepburn

George Cukor cast stage actress Katharine Hepburn in her first film role, ‘A Bill of Divorcement,’ as the great John Barrymore’s daughter. Both the film and Hepburn were an instant success. Beginning at the top would intimidate some people - Katharine Hepburn is not among them.

50 years and 8 more pictures with Cukor would follow, among them, 'Pat and Mike,' 'Adam's Rib' and 'The Philadelphia Story.' The team reconvened in Wales to co-create Emlyn Williams’ wonderful play, ‘The Corn Is Green,’ in a made-for-television movie format. Hepburn was thrilled with her role as a Welsh school teacher, and she certainly fit right in, bicycling through luscious green countryside on the natural, unpaved roads. She remained in character pedaling the heavy 1890 bicycle (lots of downhill), stopping for wildflowers, and even breaking her rule about signing autographs for locals (extras) in the production.

Although there are several fine films to draw from for a kitchen theme, including ‘Woman of The Year’ (right) and ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner,’ (both with Spencer Tracy) it’s well known that Miss Hepburn loves fresh corn. Inspiration for these wonderful recipes came from her last project with Cukor, ‘The Corn Is Green.’

Legend has it that Miss Hepburn first became a child star by leaving nothing to chance. She composed, directed and acted in plays she produced on the front porch of her family home. She staged her own version of ‘Beauty and The Beast’ (she was the Beast and her friend Ali played the Beauty) and charged 25 cents admission for each performance. Her early enterprise in the show business world chalked up a healthy gross profit. The $60 take from that production went to the Navajo Indians to help them buy a gramophone. They bought a music box. It still exists.

The Legend of the Prayer Feather

The Prayer Feather ceremony was originated with Lakota Tribe but was adopted by many Native American Tribes in North America. It has been said that you are to fill the the feather with your prayer, your energy, and tie it to a tree branch or someplace where the wind will blow it, every time the wind moves and it flutters back and forth, it carries your hope and dream, the prayer you made, to Grandfather (God). It was also said that the prayer feather also reaches out to others. Whenever anyone sees it blowing, his or her hopes and dreams are carried to Grandfather too. The native phrase, MI TAKAYE OYACIN, (We are all of one blood - all related) was spoken in the ceremony to signify unity.

Her Last Will posted at smoking gun provides for part of Hepburn's waterfront estate in Old Saybrook. Hepburn directed a portion of property be turned over to a government agency or "environmental or conservation organization" that will "protect the lot from development" and maintain the space "for the benefit of the general public."
