Bono spoke to an audience of 14,000 attendees who gathered to honor 5 special women selected to receive Minerva Awards this year. His comments included a personal love note from across the pond:

" .... Your country is not just a geographical location; your country is an idea, and it's a great idea. The idea that all men and women are created equal, that the poorest matter as much as the richest, and in a world of plenty, no one should die for lack of food in their belly, that where you live should not determine whether you live, or whether you die. The idea that our dreams are one and our fates are one. The idea that anything is possible, anything is possible -- that is the America the world needs right now, that's the America I've always loved. Amen?"

U2's Bono knighted by Queen ambassador
U2 singer Bono was presented with an honorary knighthood by representatives of the Queen of England on Thursday morning (March 29th) in Dublin. According to a post at the band's web site, Bono was knighted in recognition of his services to the music industry and for his humanitarian work. The vocalist said after receiving the award, "What a great year for an Irishman to receive an award from Great Britain...I couldn't be more proud. I would like to thank Her Majesty's Ambassador for pinning this award on me in my home town, and the band for not bursting my balloon."

Bono was joined at the ceremony by family, friends and bandmates, while a letter of congratulations from British Prime Minister Tony Blair was also read during the event.

The Queen's Ambassador said that the honorary knighthood was in recognition of "Bono's extraordinary and inspirational campaigning to fight global poverty and focus international attention on the plight of Africa; the AIDS pandemic; and the third world debt crisis."

Because the term "Sir" can be used only by British-born knights, the Irish singer will not be called "Sir Bono." He joked to reporters after the ceremony, "You can call me pretty much anything you want, except 'sir.' You can call me lord of lords or a demi-god."

The demi-god and his merely human bandmates are reportedly at work on a new album.

Sometimes when I'm walking down the street a passer by will say "love your work on Africa, Bono, great cause." Sometimes, they wish they hadn't. As I'm Irish, I love to talk to strangers. I love to talk about Africa. It can be hard to get away... Each time it makes me think we need to do much more to get the message across that this is not a "cause," this pandemic that we and so many others are working on. 5,500 Africans dying a day of AIDS, a preventable, treatable disease is not a cause. 5,500 Africans dying each day is an emergency.

Enter Product (RED). (RED) is a new idea we're launching to work alongside the growing ONE Campaign to Make Poverty History.
